Hi Luisa, thanks for the interview! Please introduce yourself.
I was born in Bern, Switzerland, on a very snowy day at the end of March, 49 years ago. My parents are from Italy and had emigrated to Switzerland a year before. They made a great effort to have me come into the world in Switzerland, because otherwise they would have had to wait 2 years before they could bring me into the country. As they both had to work, I spent the first year and a half in the care of a Swiss family. Mom and dad would drop me off on Sunday night and pick me up again on Friday evening.
Unfortunately I do not have any contact to those surrogate parents who I would love to thank for their care of me. After that, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother in Naples, Italy, and came back to Bern at the age of 6, when I started Kindergarten. It was not easy, as I did not speak Swiss German any longer and the other children teased me and sometimes beat me up for being a “tschingeli”, a derogatory word for dirty Italian. But I did well in school nevertheless and eventually got into the WMB (Wirtschaftsmittelschule) without even taking the entrance exam which back then was a big deal. During that time I decided to acquire the Swiss citizenship.
Within a year of being in the workforce, I joined the EDA (Eidgenoessisches Departement fuer Aussendienst) and represented Switzerland in Florence, Beijing and New York City. I arrived in the US over 25 years ago and have been living here ever since. I now live in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, just an hour and a half outside New York. I have my own business called “The Inner Contessa“.
I mentor women executives and entrepreneurs find their confidence so that they can become leaders in their careers, families and communities. I have an office in New York and PA and have also co-authored a best-selling book. I lecture and conduct workshops in Germany, Italy, Japan and the US and take a group of women on a retreat to Europe every fall.
